This book was conceived as an accompanying volume to the travelling exhibit of the same title, which opened in Madrid in 1999. Mauricio contributed an illustrated chapter about the first reconstruction ever done of Homo antecessor, as well as abundant artwork which also appeared in the exhibit.

In this book, long-time collaborator and friend Jordi Agustí (author of 'Memoria de la Tierra') and Mauricio present an overview of 65 million years of mammalian evolution in the European continent. It includes dozens of pencil drawings showing the anatomy and action of fossil mammals, and 16 colour paintings.

This volume offers the definitive study of the rich vertebrate fauna from this exceptional late Miocene site in Kenya, and its environemntal and geological context. For this volume Mauricio prepared restorations of the most relevant mammal species (and a few crocodiles too), and some environmental reconstructions, working in close consultation with the authors of the individual chapters.
